Silly Sangria

Had a funny past 24 hours... I'm not a big drinker but I do love summer drinks so after work yesterday I picked up some ingredients for my mom's recipe for homemade sangria - Jarika and I recently purchased a big container with a spout so we can keep our sangria cold in the fridge and grab a glass whenever we want... Oh summer :)

Here's my mom's killer recipe if you'd like to try some for yourself! I usually just freestyle pour and then taste so no need to fret if you don't completely follow the recipe - its fairly fool proof if I can do it...

2 parts wine of any sort (I often buy the cheapest box wine so I have lots)
1 1/2 parts juice (usually a combo of pineapple, orange, mango - any tropical fruit juices)
a few shots of brandy (for every 1L of wine use about 2 shots of brandy)
Club soda (for every 1L of wine use 1/2 - 3/4 a can)
sliced lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits (you can pick and choose which ones you want and use however many you want)

After hanging around the apartment happily sipping my sangria Darrin came over and we were going to head to The Toad (one of the local pubs) to meet up with some friends. Before we left we wound up having a 90's youtube marathon, revisiting some of our faves from junior high... Darrin was shockingly good at guessing which songs would be my favourite! We also made some hilarious observations about 90's music videos...

- the band is often in the midst of a crowd of people rocking out to their music or in an enclosed room
- the lead singers will can almost always be found walking at a fast pace down the street while screaming emotional ballads and being checked out by members of the opposite sex
- after Jamiroquai walked on walls, everyone wanted to do it

Maybe I'm predictable in that I'm attracted to 'poppy' upbeat music but I was so shocked that he knew I would have loved these songs...

And some other gems...

This could go on forever but you get the gyst :)

Anyways it was a late one last night and I opened at work this morning which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I've worked at breakfast places for the past three years and even though working after a few too many the night before can be difficult I find I usually have more interesting days. For instance today, the woman who the restaurant is named after came in so I had quite a good time serving her and the women she was with apparently work for a casting company, told me they liked 'my look', gave me their card, and wanted me to send them headshots of myself... I feel like I'm not the person stuff like that would normally happen to so I think my reaction was a bit awkward - It sounds like some sort of cheesy movie plot line but I hear it pays well so I may as well give it a go if it helps me buy more paint!

I'm off to the uni shortly to try to finish my crazy pot that's due on monday - I'm really loving ceramics - everything from throwing slop in the mixer and making clay to working on the wheel - I'll take photos tonight and post them asap!

Amazon also came by with my 'Sex Pots' book but I wasn't home so I have to figure out how to get a hold of that - I wish it was just Canada Post delivering so I could just run up to the drugstore and pick up my package rather than trying to arrange a time with Amazon... Darrin has been going vegan lately so he purchased a new book too - Vegan Yum Yum - it's based on a woman's blog and she aparently has some amazing vegan recipes. Fiddle heads are in season so we're going to pick some up and alter one the recipes to our liking :)

Once I have a vegan recipe turn out well I'll share it - as of right now I still have much to master when it comes to vegan/veggie cooking!

I hope you guys are having a great weekend! Any recipe suggestions or favourite 90s videos?

  1. my recipe recommendation involves zero cooking (hooray!) but is very tasty. it's a bean salsa from "how it all vegan". basically it involves a can of black beans, a can of corn, a tomato or two, a red or yellow pepper, an avocado, fresh jalapeno, garlic, lime juice and cilantro. pretty much chop all the stuff up, throw it in a bowl, add some salt and pepper if you want, and voila.

also here is my 90s video:

  2. Hahaha Tamara I always love your comments! I will totally try that recipe and that Matthew Good video is such a perfect example of the crowd swarming the band... Wasn't that one of the main songs in Cruel Intentions? Remember Joshua Jackson's hair in that movie? The 90s are hilarious...

  3. Hmmn, I don't remember if they used it in Cruel Intentions. I remember they used that Placebo song, though. It's been ages since I've seen that movie. But now I have the urge to watch it so maybe I need to have a 90's night soon!

Oh also I remembered I sort of know this girl who has a website about vegan food. She hasn't added a whole lot of recipes yet but some of it looks pretty yummy.

  7. Fiddleheads recipe:
(Just a note in case you haven't cooked fiddleheads before - make sure you cook them through, otherwise is is possible they'll make you sick. Just boil until fork tender. It doesn't take long - probably 3 to 5 minutes)

Melt a whack of butter in a pan over medium heat (the more the better is my philosophy - or swap with olive oil to make it vegan). Add lots of minced garlic and some chopped shallots. Cook until the shallots soften up. Toss in some lemon zest, lemon juice and season with kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Add cooked fiddleheads and stir it all together.
Toss with cooked pasta. Grate tons of fresh parmesan (or leave the cheese out, or sub vegan cheese) over top and enjoy.
If you want to have a super earthy meal, throw some morel mushrooms in there too. Very Manitoba springtime!
